Martin Prokop 8th at Rally Portugal

After more than two months and dropped Rally Argentina, the crew of Jipocar Czech National Team – Martin Prokop and Jan Tománek – appeared back in WRC again and scored valuable 8th place at Rally Portugal last weekend. After 7th place in Mexico, another good WRC points for Prokop who is having a kind of multi-motorsport season this year. Starting with his first ever participation at Dakar, continuing with circuit racing in Mercedes SLS GT3 in 12H Mugello with Robert Kubica and short race at Brno, where Martin managed to win the event, this patchy year will be closed down by Dakar Rally again.

With only one short test before the race and after a long time out of the seat of his Fiesta WRC, Martin was having a nice battle with Henning Solberg during the first Leg of Rally Portugal, despite the speed and pace of Czech driver maybe was not what we used to see in his best WRC days.

Martin Prokop: „Rough conditions of the Portuguese gravel roads and Rally Sardinia just in three weeks’ time also forced me to save the car a bit so I was sometimes rather choosing a slower, but safer driving style. I was happy to battle with Henning as our cars are quite the same and also conditions on the road were similar for both of us. Unfortunately he lost his wheel later on Friday so we couldn´t continue in our duel. On Saturday and Sunday I was just keeping my pace and avoiding mistakes, that’s all and there was nothing more to work out. Fortunately we managed to climb up into top 10 as some guys were not lucky to finish this rough rally. Now I am really looking forward to Sardinia. We will have a test there again so I am sure that I will be more confident and faster during the race itself. I was quite passive towards rallying within last weeks but now with two races in a row, it should start to work again nicely.“

Team manager Quirin Müller: „We are happy to be back in the WRC, very friendly and familiar environment for us as we are newcomers to Dakar and circuits without any experience. Rally is our beloved motorsport discipline, despite our plans are developing also in other directions. 8th place from Portugal is beyond our realistic expectations, we knew it will not be easy after such a brake and being engaged in circuit racing for few months. Our car is in a good condition after this demanding rally and we can get ready for Sardinia. I am sure we will enjoy the race there as well as many of our fans.“
