Sixth place for Martin Prokop from Rally Portugal

Martin Prokop of Jipocar Czech National Team and his co-driver Jan Tománek are returning from Rally Portugal with sixth place and eight points scored to the Word Rally Championship rankings.

This year´s Rally Portugal was very difficult in terms of changing surface and conditions, with different grip in every corner. Tyre choice was not easy and also Martin had some bad luck in decisions, particularly on Saturday afternoon as he decided for hard compound in expectation of dry road. Though Martin and Jan were moving up the leader board during the whole weekend and before the last Sunday Leg they were 7th overall, with strong Huyndai drivers Neuville and Hänninen on positions close behind.

Martin Prokop: “We are at the finish of very difficult and demanding rally. Portugal again showed how unsearchable it is and was a big test for both drivers and cars. Before the rally I was saying to myself, OK you can be happy to finish in top 10 here, the competition is so big! So the sixth place for sure is a result I can be happy with. Lot of top drivers either went over the edge of risk and crashed or their cars didn´t manage the pace and rough conditions. From this point of view I am happy to achieve such a good result without bigger problems. On the other hand I have to admit that my feelings are quite inconsistent. I tried really hard to improve my driving style and times during the weekend to move closer to the best factory drivers, but this unfortunately didn´t happen. I have to improve myself what the team and fans are expecting from me, but we are still on the same speed with virtually no progress. I do not want to fall in some kind of stereotype.”

Co-driver Jan Tománek adds: “We tried to fight and to do our best on Sunday morning, not to let the guys behind to get our position so easily. Unfortunately we had very bad conditions with very low visibility during the recce of the first Sunday special stage and because we are making totally new pacenotes which were not ideal this time, we couldn´t do better during the race. We also had a puncture on the second Sunday special stage but we got safe to the finish and in a good time what turned out as a key to the success of getting the sixth place. Thierry Henry had some problems during the Powerstage so we moved back on sixth place in front of him with small difference of just few seconds.”

In the current overall standings of the World Rally Championships Martin Prokop is 9th and the same position belongs to Jan Tománek in Co-drivers´ classification. Jipocar Czech National Team is 6th overall in the Teams´ standings.

For the next event of WRC 2014 teams are travelling back over the Atlantic for Rally Argentina at the beginning of May.
